Ancient heartlands

Climb before the heat, listen to the stories behind the stone, and meet the village landscapes surrounding Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals.

Ancient heartlands

Places to know

Three ancient places, each with its own rhythm.

The Cultural Triangle rewards an early start and an unhurried route. Rock citadels, painted cave temples and the remains of a medieval capital sit among lakes, forest and present-day village life.

Sigiriya

Begin before the heat gathers and climb through water gardens, boulder gardens and the great Lion Gate to the summit of Sigiriya. The view reveals why this fifth-century rock citadel feels inseparable from the plains around it.

Dambulla

At Dambulla, five cave sanctuaries hold centuries of Buddhist sculpture and painting beneath a vast overhanging rock. Visit with time to notice the changing chambers, then step outside to wide views across the central plains.

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa is best explored slowly, moving between royal ruins, reservoirs, shrines and the serene stone figures of Gal Vihara. A knowledgeable guide turns scattered monuments into the story of a sophisticated medieval capital.
